What did you enjoy about your experience working in Residential Education?

As I thrive on building relationships and making a difference in my community, ResEd provided me with a dynamic and deeply rewarding opportunity and experience that aligns with my commitment to student success. I genuinely enjoy sharing tips and tricks to new first-year students, that I have personally learned throughout my undergraduate journey to help them navigate college life effectively. It not only is a fun experience to live with your residents, engage with them, and positively impact their lives further, but also to connect with the beautiful team of student staff and pro-staff who are there to support at every step of the way, truly creating a home away from home.

What I enjoy most about being part of ResEd is the sense of community and connection it creates. I’ve had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, build meaningful relationships, and make a positive impact on students’ college experiences. I love being part of such a supportive team where we encourage one another, share ideas, and celebrate our successes together. This experience has shaped me not only as a leader but also as a person, and I’m truly grateful to be part of such a caring and inspiring community.

One of the things I loved most about working in Residential Education was being part of two amazing communities, one with my residents and another with my RA team. Building those connections made the job incredibly meaningful. With my residents, I became someone they could come to not just for housing questions or policy reminders, but for real conversations about their college experience, mental health, or personal challenges. At the same time, being part of an RA team taught me the importance of collaboration and support. Overall, ResEd helped me strengthen my empathy, leadership, and communication skills, and it reminded me how much I enjoy being part of a community that uplifts others.

What advice would you give to applicants interested in the position?

Be your true self! Instead of trying to fit an agenda for the role you want, your own personality/self could be perfect for another role in resed you might not know of!

Don't be afraid to ask for help! This department is all about growth and the best way to grow is to learn from others. You can ask your RA questions or even ask to meet with the Residential Director of one of the campus housing buildings. Don't be afraid to use your resources.

The best advice I could give is to have confidence and trust yourself, be able to ask for help when you need it, and always look for opportunities to grow.

What is something that surprised you about the job?

I'm surprised and grateful for how much support we get as student staff in Residential Education from our supervisors and our coworkers. My co-RAs and PAs are some of my closet friends here at UC Riverside!

Residential Education provides a unique experience which cannot be found anywhere else on campus. Every year I am surprised by the level of care and support from my coworkers and supervisors throughout the department. Residential Education provides an incredible development opportunity for students across majors and I have witnessed the impact and growth our department has had on our students.

Coming into the job as a Program Advisor, I was nervous about meeting all of the expectations that the job requires of me and balancing all of my responsibilities. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of support I was given from supervisors, returning student staff, and new student staff. Coming back as a returning Program Advisor this past year, I know I wanted to provide that same level of support and passion for incoming staff to succeed in their roles!
