What do you enjoy the most about being part of Residential Education?

I enjoy being in Residential Education because I have the opportunity to meet people of all different walks of life as well as from many departments on campus. I appreciate the interactions I have with my residents and also the community as a whole. You build a network with other student staff, professional staff, and the residents. There's peers I would have never have had the opportunity to meet, help, or learn from and I appreciate I was given this opportunity.

Being a part of Residential Education, I enjoy the camaraderie I build with the people I work with! Not only do we build community for our residents, but we also create a close-knit support system within our team. Everyone is there to help each other as we all navigate work, school, and life together, and through this, I've gained genuine friendships with many people who I may have never met before.

I really enjoy creating unique programs for my residents and helping them connect with their major and career interests in unique ways! Recently I created a program called “Escape to Graduate” and the Pre-Business residents had to solve riddles and look through degree audit to figure out how to graduate. This program was one of my favorite programs to create and execute as it really helped my residents retain important major related knowledge in a unique way!

How has being a student
staff member benefited you?

Being in ResEd has helped me develop my leadership and interpersonal skills. It gave me the confidence to approach and resolve difficult situations and to be adaptable to ever-changing situations. Having worked in the Live-In side (Resident Advisors) and Engagement side (Program Advisors), I have found that no matter what role I am in, I am surrounded by a supportive student staff, and I am challenged professionally so that I continue to grow as a leader and an individual.

Joining Residential Education was one of the best decisions that I have ever made and I wish I joined earlier! I have been able to foster my leadership skills as well as conflict management through duty situations as well as handling residents and staff. From Resident Advisor to Assistant Resident Director you learn more administrative skills and build upon your intrapersonal skills. The diverse number of skills you gain in Residential Education are transferable to any future pursuits.

What advice would you give to students applying?

I recommend applying if you love developing connections, working closely with people, being a community builder that makes a difference for a college student, and/or because you genuinely love the LLC you're applying for! Being a student leader in ResEd requires a commitment in terms of care, physical, emotional, and temporal energy, but it's truly worth it IF you really care. Be you and demonstrate your true passion, drive, and good character and you have a great shot; I believe in you!

This role is perfect for those who thrive on building relationships and making a difference in their community. You’ll have the opportunity to meet a lot of new people, hear their unique stories, and create a positive impact on their college experience. It’s also a great chance to showcase your creative side through designing posters, planning events, and coming up with innovative ways to engage residents. If you’re passionate about leadership, teamwork, and creating a welcoming environment, this role will be incredibly rewarding.
